Understand Your Emotions with the Emotional Guidance Exercise

Emotions are messages and guides. Start to understand what your emotions are telling and showing you with this exercise

Your “GUT” is the best guide that you have.
There are NO good and emotions! Emotions are guides to help us understand based on how or what something makes us feel.

Right now I want to focus today just on using our emotions…..
We are going to work on shutting our brain off for tonight and trying to focus just on our emotions and feeling with our heart.

The emotion guidance exercise

First step:

Grab a piece of paper and a pen.

At the top write when I feel “No”

Now close your eyes for a minute. Remember a situation that hard, went bad, or when you didn’t listen to your gut but you knew you should have.

Go into that situation for a minute.

Next Step:

Remember what happened, how does it feel?
What are you feeling?
Where in your body are you feeling it?

Do you feel it in your stomach,
your back,
your knee,
your chest,
where in your body is it responding to how you are feeling?
Sit in that moment for just a minute.

Next Step:

Now open your eyes.

Write on your piece of paper what emotions you were feeling. How and what did it feel like?

Then below that write where in your body you felt it and how it felt.

Such as a tightness in my chest, a twinge in my knee….etc…how and where for You do you feel this?

Now take a minute and shake off all those feelings.

Shake out your arms and legs and get up and walk around for a minute if you need to.

Next Step:

Draw a line on your paper and write when I feel “yes”

Close your eyes and think of a happy moment or something great happening

Go into that situation for a minute.
Remember what happened, how does it feel?
What are you feeling?
Where in your body are you feeling it?

Next Step:

Now open your eyes.

Write on your piece of paper what emotions you were feeling. How and what did it feel like?

Then below that write where in your body you felt it and how it felt.

Such as a tightness in my chest, a twinge in my knee….etc…how and where for You do you feel this?

Final Step:

Now take a minute and shake off all those feelings.

Shake out your arms and legs and get up and walk around for a minute if you need to.

You now have your emotional guide!

You know how you feel and where in your body for when something doesn’t feel right and you should say no……

as well

as when something feels right and you should say yes!

Study this and play with it over the next week.

Have fun with it…..

But start to notice these things in your everyday situations. Start to tune into how you feel and what your “gut” or emotions are telling you.

Keep focused on how your emotions guide you all the time. Become more and more aware of when you begin to feel different emotions and how your body responds. Keep practicing this exercise.
